With the 2010 FIFA world cup in full swing, the focus has once again shifted to the rainbow nation. England’s campaign ended with a defeat at the hands of a young and fearless Germany in somewhat controversial circumstances. In football betting, picking winners is easy, finding a value winner however is not.

To check if there’s value in your football bets, simply multiply the % winning chance of your chosen side with the best decimal price of the bet. A result of more than 1.0 means that it is a value bet! (The greater the number, the greater the edge you will have over the bookmakers.)

Value betting example:

If you think that Manchester United playing at home has a 45% chance of winning against Chelsea, with the price of AH -0.5 set at 2.30.

Making progress with 2-3 steps forward and a half step back it seems. We area working offense primarily today. Our dynamic warm up and angle form tackling is at about 8 minutes now, combined with our voluntary pre-practice pass catching and kicking progressions, it is plenty of time to get the muscle blood flow and muscle activation we are looking for.

As has been the case we have all three teams doing individual drills together, which allows us to pit like skilled and sized players together. The line started off with our board drill, of course starting with a fit, then going live. This year we were blessed with some half round dummies, they work extremely well for this drill if you put 2 back to back. It forces the linemen to keep a wide base, otherwise they step on the dummy and fall. The board is less forgiving, slick and just 6 inches wide. I’m a huge believer in long half rounds, if you have the funds. We next did double team fits on a tall bag, then progressed to live double teams. Remember to pair the linemen together that will be double teaming in games, it is important that they learn how to work together as a team.

The backs were working on the splatter blocking drill then moved to the open field blocking drill we use called the diamond drill. Any player still struggling with the splatter blocking drill, stayed with it, as the open field blocking drill is an advanced drill. They then worked on the rest of the «Sainted Six» base series with coaches holding dummies at the point of attack and using cones to designate linemen.

The line then worked their first two steps of the blocking tags we use to tell them how to block on each play. We started with power, then went to sweep, reverse and wedge.

We moved to our base blocking rule review, ( which they all did very well with), then added dads along the defensive line front and had players fit and freeze on the correct «defender» with proper head placement on all of our blocking tags. Even the age 7-9 kids seemed to pick this up very well with very few exceptions.

Lastly we worked about 10 minutes on our base pass block technique.

The backs in the meanwhile were repping plays, the age 7-9s are still on the Sainted Six, the 10-11s are dong the same as there are just 6-8 kids that have played before on this team and just 2 experienced backs. The age 12-13s put in the Mouse Series and Spinner Series in as all 4 backs have played for us before, but may be in different positions. The line however has a number of rookie players on it. We were also able to work a number of the base adjustments in with the 12-13s. With all 3 teams we are repping plays on air with coaches at the point of attack with shields. We have each coach coaching tiny portions of the offense, with one coach holding the left side of the o-line accountable to correct first steps, head placement and technique and another coach doing the same for the right side of the offensive line. We of course are doing that for every position on every one of our football plays. After each rep a new group of players rush in to run the next play, we are a little slower than we want to be at this point . The youngest group is getting a play off every 20 seconds or so, the age 10-11’s are at about 16 seconds and the varsity is at about 12-13 seconds.

There are a number of trick football plays that are perfectly legal and ethical to run in youth football. There are others that are not legal, but we still see them from time to time at both the youth and High School levels.

One illegal football play that has reared its ugly head again the last few year is the old «Where»s the Tee» or «Wrong Ball» plays. These are plays where the quarterback yells out to the defense that «we’ve got the wrong ball, I need a different ball» or «Where’s the Tee, We need a Tee». In the meantime the center places the football in the quarterbacks hands and the quarterback slowly walks off the field feigning he is replacing the ball. All the other offensive players act like nothing is going on, but once the defense lets down its guard, the quarterback is off to the races. In the «Where’s the Tee» version of this football play, as the QB takes off to the sidelines to supposedly get a tee that he has supposedly forgotten, the ball is snapped and another player takes off with the ball. In most cases with both of these football plays, the sideline is in on it and the «coach» is at the sidelines with a ball or tee and or yelling for the QB to switch out the ball or «come get the tee».

Not only is it Bush League it is an illegal football play.

Any action or verbiage used to deceive the defense into thinking that the ball is not about to become live is an UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT PENALTY, 15 yards.

This is the old «Where’s the Tee» play that was made illegal many many moons ago.

Nearly all Youth Football Leagues use Federation High School Rules with a few exceptions of «Special Rules» that they all make very clear to their teams often in a mini rule manual. This manual covers exceptions to the High School Rules only. Unsportsmanlike Conduct is not one of the exceptions and is covered in the Federation Rule Book under 9.5.1b. Again, Any action or verbiage used to deceive the defense into thinking that the ball is not about to become live is illegal. Acting like you need a new ball or have the wrong ball or are missing the kicking tee are all illegal under this rule if the ball is snapped during said baloney.

There are plenty of ways to compete in youth football and for some, a trick play is something they like to put in. I’m not a big believer in trick plays, we are going to fundamental you to death and I don’t like stealing practice time to perfect trick plays. I do however like to put in one trick play later in the year just to keep the players attention and keep them interested in midseason. We rarely run it to gain advantage, but as a reward to the kids, often as an extra point play when we are up a touchdown or two.

We do practice against the above illegal play in our defensive walk throughs and fit and freeze. But fortunately we have yet to see it in 15 years of coaching.

Nothing is at stake in international friendlies. These games are of some importance only when they are used as warm-ups ahead of crucial competitions like the World Cup.

Most club managers find these friendlies an utter nuisance. Some of them fight tooth and nail with the country manager by refusing to release their star players. There are numerous cases of players returning with injuries which greatly jeopardised the clubs’ chances in the league and other competitions. The ‘club vs country’ debate is always controversial.

The conventional wisdom is to avoid betting these friendlies as they are looked upon as meaningless. The results are often unpredictable. But a savvy punter may find value in the uncertainties.

The following factors can be considered :

1. Home Advantage Of Intimidating Venue

Countries like Azerbaijian and Kazakhstan, etc. are not the most comfortable places to visit. How do you expect the soccer superstars to enjoy :

a) Long flights (some countries do not have links for direct flight).

b) Less than hygienic living environment and food.

c) Strange customs (especially if the country is of a predominantly different religion).

d) Climate (it cannot be easy to travel long distances from freezing winter in Europe to play in a humid stadium in Turkey on a summer night).

2. Motivation

It is somewhat difficult to expect motivation when the games are considered meaningless. However, do be mindful of :

a) The Home team may be more motivated as they are playing for their country in front of their fans.

b) The game is more likely to be telecast live especially if the Home team is playing a highly ranked Away team like England. Thus the Home team will be super charged-up.

c) Due to the live telecast, this is a good opportunity especially for players from an ‘obscure’ country to showcase their talent, hoping to attract the attention of sports talent scouts of big European clubs.

d) The game is used to restore national pride. If the country has been thrashed badly by their opponent in a previous game, there may be motivation to treat the game as a revenge fixture.

3. Team Line-Up

Do not expect key players to feature in these friendlies. Most clubs are reluctant to release their star players for fear of them returning injured or fatigued. So most players chosen are often the second stringers and they themselves may not go all out in order to lessen risk of injury.

When most teams play cautiously, most of the time it will be a dull match.

Conclusion

Most punters are only familiar with the same few famous national teams. Countries which they hardly heard of will automatically be regarded as ‘not good’. However, as the results of these friendlies are unpredictable, the smart punter can spot enormous value in some underdogs, especially playing at Home.
