In situations like this, when only few seconds left, the referee has two choices: 1) should blow the whistle before the ball is put in play to avoid any confusion. 2) Allow few extra seconds until the initial action is completed. 3) The worst possible decision is to wait until the ball is kicked in the air, and then blow the whistle….!!!…Dumb decision by the referee no matter how you cut it.

47. Once the ref blew his whistle to end the game the goal couldn't stand but what an absolute numpty he was. It is part of the referee's role to keep order on the pitch and blowing up at that moment displayed poor judgement. Any team would be annoyed at that situation. Good referees let the attack play out and blow the whistle when the clearance is made rather than let the attacking team get the ball under control and put a cross in. Also, there was no more reason to dismiss Bellingham than any of the other four or five Madrid players who had surrounded him and were angrily remonstrating with him.
