The Heartbreak of A Penalty Kick Miss: Who Should Bear The Aftermath Pain and Guilt?

Football is one of the finest sporting activities fancied globally. The fun of the game is heightened, especially by the numerous leagues and championships. Anti-sports citizens in a country magically fall in love with the football game when they see their fellow countrymen adorned in their national colors determined to play enthusiastically for their homeland. The most succinct part of the football game that can break the heart of supporters and football enthusiasts is the taking of a penalty kick. In fact, it is one of the most high-pressure situations that sometimes leave an entire nation glued to the screen of a television set! When a team gets that opportunity to win via penalty shootout and is missed, the pain that ensues is very unbearable. The aftermath pain or guilt is normally placed on the player who kicked the penalty, the coach who selected the penalty kicker, and sometimes on the entire team. However, when a football team plays a football game and the team loses the match on penalties, who should bear the ultimate blame?

Generally, penalty kickers are ultimately blamed for missing penalty kicks. The furious supporters vent their rage on the player and sometimes extend it to their innocent family members. Such was the case of the recent Senegalese and Liverpool star, Sadio Mane. After missing the all-important penalty kick against Cameroon, angry supporters ransacked his house and that of his relatives, destroying their property and other belongings. As a result, his family members had to seek refuge from the security personnel in the country for fear of loss of their lives. A similar situation happened in Ghana when the captain of the Black Stars failed to bury the game by scoring the last- minute penalty kick against Uruguay to take the team to their first semi-final in the 2010 FIFA world cup. The player and his family were hooted at, bitterly insulted and humiliated by some angry Ghanaian supporters. Unfortunately, some players had to pay with their lives as it happened to Andre Escobar of Colombia for scoring an own goal in the 1994 World Cup! These untold pains vented on penalty kickers are very disgusting, inhumane, cowardice and a misunderstanding of the essence of the sporting activity.

Football, like any other sporting game, is supposed to be a recreational activity. It is aimed at bringing unity amongst people and cultures. The nature of the game’s competitiveness, demands that one team wins and the other loses. This is part of the rudiments of the football game. Thus, when a team misses a penalty kick by one of their players, the blame and guilt must not be vented on the player, neither should it be placed on the shoulder of anyone. Winners of penalty kicks are just fortunate and lucky persons. Scoring a penalty kick is not a yardstick to evaluate the football skills and expertise of a player. After all, some of the world’s greatest footballers of all time have missed important penalty kicks. Classic examples are that of the Italian Roberto Baggio, who missed a penalty kick decider in the 1994 world cup as well as the French, Michel Platini’s penalty miss against Brazil in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Did the penalty kick miss of these iconic figures in the football sporting game make them less talented or skillful in the game? Certainly not! It would be unjust and an act of betrayal on the part of supporters of teams and nations to be furious against penalty kickers, coaches, or the entire football-playing teams.

It must be reckoned that players who missed penalty kicks already bear personal guilt which imposes heavy burdens on them. For instance, Roberto Baggio still can’t forgive himself of the penalty kick he missed in the past two decades and over! Ghana’s captain Asamoah Gyan has vowed not to take penalty kicks as a result of the deep scar his penalty miss at the 2010 World Cup has left in his heart! Therefore, why should supporters and fans of the football game aggravate their pain by taking injurious actions against the lives, personalities, families and possessions of penalty kickers, their coaches as well as their entire teams?

Supporters of the game must always remember to exhibit the spirit of unity, solidarity, and communalism to the entire team and support them in thick and thin moments. Of course, true and patriotic supporters of the football sporting game must rejoice with their teams when they win and more importantly weep with them, as it were when their teams lose. The aftermath pain and guilt that comes as a result of the heartache of a penalty miss must be borne by all- the playing team and supporters. This would help in deepening the essence of the football sporting game as a recreational activity aimed at fostering unity amongst the diverse people and cultures of the world.

Traditionally A College Feeling

It’s what we do to kick off the game; it’s what we do between quarters, at half time, on third down conversions, and when touchdowns are made; it’s what we do that makes us proud of our college and our team. It sets us apart from all others in our league and gives us a unique branding of who we are and all that we represent. It’s called tradition, (a state of mind, a state of inner being and outward display of emotional spirit) or simply put «pride and joy»!

Whether you display your devotion to a college team by the apparel you sport or the gear you accumulate over time, one matter of certainty is that every fan is bound to know, at best, a handful of the many traditions upheld on campus or in the football stadium. From adrenaline rushes to hair raising goose bumps, from moments of solitude and silence to moments of deafening chants and stadium rumbles, there isn’t a college campus or college stadium anywhere where you won’t find a student body or fan base steadfast and enthusiastically involved.

Speaking of stadium rumbles, this calls to mind a Metallica favorite. The Hokies of Virginia Tech are known for their «Enter Sandman» explosive entrance on to the football field as the crowd jumps up and down the moment the music fills the air, causing a rumble effect throughout the stadium. If you are a college sports fanatic and haven’t visited Lane Stadium for this experience, make it a bucket list item. School mascots representative of live animals escort their team to the field like Uga, the bulldog from the University of Georgia and Ralphie, the enormous buffalo from the University of Colorado. Warriors like Tommy Trojan and the Travelers from the University of Southern California and Chief Osceola riding in on a beautiful Appaloosa with a flaming spear take center stage to commence their performance on the field.

Others may rub their hands for good luck on significant tokens or symbolic structures prior to leaving the team’s tunnel or stepping foot on the field of play, like Clemson University’s Howard’s Rock and the University of Maryland’s Terrapin. Infamous arm motions like that of the University of Florida’s notorious gator chomp and hand gestures symbolizing bullhorns for the South Florida Bulls and Texas Longhorns, or the outburst of chants such as, «We Are… Marshall» or «Let’s Go… Tigers»! And then there’s a bit of history to be noted in things like the «Ramblin’ Wreck» of Georgia Tech and the «Sooner Schooner» of Oklahoma. Regardless of what any college or university embraces with tradition, those values interject a deeper inward feeling of pride and spirited exuberance.

Invariably, acts of traditions are not limited to fight songs, sporting school colors, game day chants, body motions, team spirit cheers, and scoring rituals, but they are certain to be learned by newcomers and carried out faithfully game by game, year after year, and decades to come. Many times over, countless traditions seem to have been magically, or accidentally, whimmed up on the spur of the moment with no real reason or purpose in mind. They may have just begun as an unintentional moment of joyous expression, even sometimes perpetrated as a joke of sorts. Be it coincidence or persistence, these college feelings happen to have all the right stuff that dwells in the hearts and minds of students and parents, fans and spectators, players and coaches, staff and faculty members to the point where you might hear one say, «The color orange is in my blood» or «I bleed purple». You can’t get any closer to the heart than that.

A Kicker With a Ponytail

A tomboy at heart with hair pulled back, Lauren Luttrell, a graduate of Spotsylvania High School, has her sights set on becoming a kicker for the Virginia Tech Hokies and if that comes to fruition, the first female to join the college football team. Luttrell played soccer for the Spotsy Knights but it was her passion for sports and athletic ability to become a kicker for a collegiate football team.

Last summer before arriving on campus at Virginia Tech as a freshman, Luttrell’s supervisor at Famous Dave’s BBQ, David Turner, was intrigued by her desire and encouraged her to try out for Virginia Tech’s team as a walk-on. Luttrell thought he was crazy but Turner persisted and before you knew it, Luttrell contacted the Hokies’ football department and had been invited to try out.

Luttrell showed up at Lane Stadium during her first week of classes and saw head coach Frank Beamer standing on the field. There were a handful of kickers, a few punters and a few long snappers at the tryout. She was the only one with a ponytail but once she started kicking, her nervousness diminished and she fit in just fine. She missed only once during the workout. While Beamer was impressed, he did not have a spot for Luttrell and asked her to try again in the spring.

That winter, training for a second chance, Luttrell worked diligently with her kicking coach, Dave DeArmas, who attended training camps with the St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers after playing college football at the University of Connecticut. Aside from practice and technique, DeArmas taught her things like how the wind at the bottom of a two or three-tiered stadium differs from the wind blowing atop the flag poles above the stadium. He took pictures of her form and showed her what needed to be fixed.

Luttrell is quite comfortable kicking field goals within 42 yards but is not familiar suited up with a helmet and pads, not to mention the pressure of a game winning kick in a stadium packed with exuberant fans. Gaining experience in the true atmosphere comes with time invested.

Clearly the Hokies needed a kicker. Redshirt sophomore Cody Journell was suspended indefinitely after being arrested for breaking and entering and was charged with a Class 2 felony due to the alleged use of a dangerous weapon. Prior to the Hokies’ Orange Bowl game against Michigan, senior kicker Tyler Weiss, a graduate of Courtland High School, was sent home for missing curfew.

As a walk-on and one of ten kickers, Luttrell’s next tryout occurred March 31st. She made all four field goal attempts in the 20 to 25 yard range kicking her way to the second round in the 35 yard range making three out of four attempts with one falling short of the crossbar and therefore not advancing to the third round. Impressed with her ability, Coach Frank Beamer thanked her for trying out, offered encouragement to keep trying and explained that she just didn’t have the power required to make the cut. A disheartened Luttrell vowed to keep kicking away at her goal; a goal to nail it between two uprights, particularly in Lane Stadium at Virginia Tech, as the Hokies’ kicker.

Had Luttrell made the team, the media frenzy would begin. How could a young woman, hair pulled back in a ponytail, maintain and perform at a level expected in a «man’s» sport? Luttrell’s kicks on the field would definitely draw attention to the team both favorably from some and undoubtedly gibe like by others. Although the social sacrifices and other possible ramifications to Luttrell taking part in a male dominated sport are many; the benefits, if played well, can be relatively rewarding.
