Professional football as a competitive sport has had its unfair share of tragedies over the years. It is both entertaining and dangerous especially on the field of play. The Nigerian sporting family witnessed one of the most horrific football tragedies on the 23rd of December 2008, when nine female amateur footballers and two coaches were burnt beyond recognition in an auto crash on their way from Jos, Plateau state.
The tears of sorrow had hardly dried up, when 15 members of an amateur side, F.C Jimeta from Adamawa state, Nigeria, died in another auto crash on the 26th of January 2009. Twelve of the dead were players, while the remaining three were trainers.
The tragedy that took place on the 26th of January 2009 had hardly subsided when another devastating incident occurred on the 21st of February 2009. In a single swoop, 13 Football supporters of Nigeria Premier League side Ocean Boys F.C of Yenegoa were killed by persons suspected to be cultist, on their way to attending a premier league match involving their team and Bayelsa United at the Ughelli Township Stadium in Delta State, Nigeria.
Nigerian footballers have also had their fair share of tragedies on and off the field of play. Below is a list of some of the players who have braved all odds to bring joy to football loving Nigerians but later succumbed to the cold hand of death.
Samuel Okwaraji
Nigeria enterprising midfielder Samuel Tochukwuma Okwaraji slumped and died on August 12, 1989 during a World Cup qualifying match between Nigeria and Angola. He died of a heart related ailment.
Amir Angwe
Amir Angwe died on the field of play while starring for Julius Berger F.C on October 29th 1995. It was later discovered that he died of a heart attack.
George Igenewari
The younger brother to Nigerian former international- George Finidi was slain by the bullet of rival supporters during an F.A Cup match involving his club- Rangers F.C and Stationary Stores of Lagos in 1995.
Tunde Charity
He was a member of the Flying Eagles team that participated in the 1989 U-20 World Championship held in Saudi Arabia. He died of a head injury sustained in the playing field while featuring for Bendel Insurance F.C in a league match in 1997.

For Eden Hazard, the first season at Chelsea was supposed to be difficult, given the Premier League’s immense physical demands and his modest stature at 5’8″. Hazard though announced himself in a respectable way with 13 goals in the season. The next season got him 17 goals plus the PFA Young Player of the Year award. The season after, he scored another 19 and won the PFA player of the Year award. Both seasons he was unanimously voted Chelsea’s Player of the Year.
Three seasons with the West London outfit, and Hazard was a superstar. His dribbling skills were mesmerizing, his ability to outfox defenders with ease was a treat to watch. He could score at will, his pace was amazing and his set-pieces were brilliant.
Indeed, terminologies like ‘the next Messi’ and ‘a future Ballon d’or’ were heard when referring to Hazard. And while Hazard did find himself crashing on the football turf often, courtesy of some aggressive defending, his form took an abruptly similar turn before long.
Playing the 2015-16 season for the defending champions of the Premier League, Hazard lost possession often, and it looked like his heart was not in the game. He tried switching it up but nothing came of it. His tally of just six goals bore a symbiotic relationship to Chelsea’s own decline over the season as they endured a lowly 10th-place finish. Unfortunately for the Belgian, he bore the brunt of the criticism from the media, former players and pundits.
They said he was a ‘flash in the pan’, ‘weakling’ and ‘overrated’. PSG and Real Madrid generously offered to give him an out. West London was not a happy place.
All that was about to change.
The new season brought in a new manager from Italy Antonio Conte and a new formation that did wonders for Chelsea, and indeed, Hazard.
As part of the tip of the unusual 3-4-3, Hazard found all the boost he needed. With his hunger back, he tore apart opposition defenders, looking stronger and sharper. He was free-scoring once more and his passes and first touches were precise and incisive.
Fuelled by his 14 goals so far presently the West Londoners sit pretty atop the league table with a bit of daylight between them and their nearest opponents. He has definitely shut all the doubters and stormed his way back into elite status. Those Messi comparisons and Ballon d’or statements are back in circulation.
A heck of a turnaround indeed for the Belgian wizard!

Football is a sport loved by people all around the world. Some of them are waiting for the big football tournaments holding their breath. But the thing that is more important than any others is that football not only offers joy and excitement to their fans, but also the opportunity to back up their favorite football leagues in various ways. There are fans who buy tickets for each football match, while others go even further by making it both entertaining and useful.
It is in common knowledge that people make money on football matches, by placing bets on teams, best players etc. But how can we find out which is the best team or which are the top leagues to place your bets on? First of all, before placing a bet you should make sure that you know everything about the team you are going to wager on: how it evolved at previous matches, which are their strong or weak points. Also pay attention to the team’s format, because this is the most important thing for a football game.
I can mention some football leagues that are considered to be the top ones and that are most suitable to bet on, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make your own research. This means I will only highlight the ones that are known to be the best countless times. The Premier League was established in 1992, being the continuation of the old Division One – the oldest football league in the world. It has a lot of talented international players and has own more than 10 titles. That’s why this is arguably one of the leagues that will live up to your expectations. The German Bundesliga is not as old as the Premier League, but is also an example of pro in the region. It is known for its high quality games. Bayern Munich is the biggest force in German football, seeing as it has won 23 domestic titles. Borussia Dortmund, FC Schalke 04, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hamburger are no less important, as they are the next giants after Bayern Munich. The Spanish La Liga is also known as the home of Real Madrid and Barcelona, two of the biggest clubs on the planet. No other team except Real Madrid and Barcelona has won La Liga since Valencia in 2004. Seria A, also called Seria A TIM is one of the professional leagues located at the top of the Italian football leagues system. Maybe it’s no longer what it used to be due to the lack of investments, but AC Milan, Inter and Juventus will always remain among the top teams.
And finally, the last one that is advisable to take into consideration when placing a bet is the French League 1. It may not be perfect, but it’s still a very competitive league.

Professional football as a competitive sport has had its unfair share of tragedies over the years. Apart from tragedies on the field of play, spectators have not been spared also.
Africa’s darkest day in soccer, perhaps remains the plane crash of April 27, 1993, when 18 members of the Zambian national team and 12 technical and crew members perished when their plane plunged into the sea off the coast of Gabon.
Tragedy cuts across continents, and that fact was confirmed during a League match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirate. A stampede at Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg resulted in the deaths of 43 people, the worst disaster in South Africa’s sporting history.
Africa again witnessed another sporting tragedy when a local League match between Lupopo and TP Mazembe on the 30th of April 2001, led to the death of 14 people during a stampede following crowd trouble at a major league match at city of Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Nigerian sporting family witnessed one of the most horrific football tragedies on the 23rd of December 2008, when nine female amateur footballers and two coaches were burnt to death in an auto crash on their way from Jos, Plateau state.
The tears of sorrow had hardly dried up, when 15 members of an amateur team, F.C Jimeta from Adamawa state, Nigeria, died in another auto crash on the 26th of January 2009.
Twelve of the dead were players, while the remaining three were trainers.
Severe heat and overcrowding resulted in the death of 4 football fans at a Ghanaian League match between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oaks in Kumasi on Sunday 8th February, 2009.
On the 21st of February 2009, 13 Football supporters of Nigeria Premier League side Ocean Boys F.C of Yenegoa were killed by persons suspected to be cultist, on their way to attending a premier league match involving their team and Bayelsa United at the Ughelli Township Stadium in Delta State, Nigeria.
Tragedy struck at the Stade Felix Houphout-Boigny stadium in Abidjan, when Cote d’ivoire played host to Malawi, as 22 football fans were crushed to death when a fence collapsed as they tried to gain entry into the already jammed packed stadium, during a 2010 World Cup Qualifier.
Footballers are not also spared of these tragedies, which oftentimes occur either on or off the field of play.
Below is a list of African footballers who have died on the field of play.

Well, you knew it would happen. We’ve got AC Milan vs Man Utd and Inter Milan against Chelsea. This could mean the return of David Beckham to play against the team where he made his name and created so many golden moments in English football.
We’ve also got the brilliant Jose Mourinho against Chelsea. He led them to two league titles an FA Cup and two Leagues Cups before resigning in 2007. For me, this is one of many things that makes football brilliant and it confirms again that the Champions League is one of the best football tournaments in the world.
I’ve got absolutely know idea who’ll win this season, although I am going to give the edge to any of the English teams, as they look stronger and have greater squad depth. Alex Ferguson must be relishing this tie, probably not due to the return of David Beckham, but at the shear fact that he’ll be able to show once again, just how far Man Utd and the English has come.
Jose Mourinho I imagine, will also be looking forward to returning again to Stamford bridge. I always get the sense that he lights up when he returns to Chelsea. One of the other interesting parts of this draw for me will also be Arsene Wengers Arsenal, who I believe to have the skills to all the way. It just depends which Arsenal team turns up on the day. As we all know, on form, they can destroy anyone.
So I’ll be in the Friary in Derby on 16 February 2010, where will you be?

Free football bets are one of the main types of free bets that are currently released by bookmakers as a means of raising interest and awareness of the service they provide.
Betting is a massive industry and bookmakers are able to release free football bets as a way of getting potential customers to sign up and try out a service before committing large volumes of their own money.
There are various ways to find free football bets. The most popular way is to go online and search through a free online betting website. There are a variety of football free bets that are offered by the many different online bookmakers, and some of these offers are only valid to customers who sign up to a website online.
Another way of fining free football bets is by looking through the sports section of a newspaper or going into bookmaking shops in order to find offers. However this would obviously take a lot longer and not many people have the time to do this on a regular basis. Therefore for most people, using a free bets website is likely to be the best option.
Free football bets will work in two different ways. Firstly, there will be the matched bets. These offers will work on the basis that the bookmaker will match the first bet that you place on any football related betting market.
The second option is a certain amount of capital that will be released by bookmakers as a completely free bet. These offers will work on the basis that no deposit is required but a unique bonus code is required. Customers can enter this code into their online account and the funds will be released for them to do with as they please.
Football is one of the biggest sports in the United Kingdom and record numbers of people are still going to watch matches despite the current state of the UK economy. Betting is also more popular now than it ever has been and free football bets are a good way for football lovers to enjoy their favourite sport just a little bit more.
The main reason why there are more free football bets than any other type of bet is because there is a greater number of matches to bet on than in any other sport. Premier League sides have 38 games to play each season in the league, and Football League sides play 46 games. There are also cup competitions and international matches. This means ample opportunity to use different bookmaker bonus offers to make a profit on football.
There are certain rules and regulations that bookmakers have to abide by when it comes to offering bonuses and incentives. These regulations are put in place simply for the protection of the consumer, because gambling is one of the most serious addictions that any person can have.
Free football bets are unique in the respect that they can be used across dozens or even hundreds of different markets in the sport. Some other types of free bets may sometimes be restricted in the respect that they can only be used in a certain market.
This makes free football bets more appealing to a customer because they are more flexible and give more opportunity to potentially make a risk free profit.

Team tracksuits are great for general workout sessions for all types of sports from rugby to football and dancing to netball and more. The benefit is that players have warm team clothing that they can wear to warm up and warm down after events, games and matches, while still looking uniform and matching.
There are some things you are going to want to bear in mind before you rush out and order your team tracksuits and the first is comfort. Before you do anything, think about the fact you want your team to be comfortable. A comfortable team is a relaxed team and you want them to feel comfortable and relaxed before a big game. Comfort is paramount and something you are going to want to focus on heavily when it comes to choosing what tracksuit to purchase for your team for the long run.
The next big decision you are going to want to make is the quality of the fabric used. When you choose a sportswear manufacturer, ask them about the fabrics used. You need to ensure that they are going to provide you with the best quality fabrics which are durable, fine quality and comfortable. Ideally the company you choose to manufacture your team tracksuits will have a proven track record and years of experience so that you can use their services with complete confidence.
Take your time to go through all the options available. The good news is that you don’t have to choose the first company or the first custom tracksuit that you see, you can take your time, go through all the available options and then make your decision accordingly. Look for a tracksuit which is going to work with your particular sport and that will be something your team can wear with complete pride now and in the future.
The style is very important and something you are going to want to look at closely. A hooded top may be the best option, but is it going to provide you with the right image? Look at the various styles and then decide. Remember the bottoms can be straight leg or elasticated at the bottom. It is always worthwhile to speak to the team to see what they want and take a majority vote on what you think is going to work best and what you can see the team wearing when attending events outside your club or school.
The overall design should be carefully selected. You want to promote a professional image, you want your team to feel part of a team the minute they put their tracksuits on and they should be the best design so that they can warm up, warm down and practice with confidence and in comfort at all times. Identify the various design options, colour combinations, so that you can see what is going to work best for you moving forward.
From here you want to incorporate your team colours. If you have chosen a tracksuit with two colour options, then match your team colours to another colour that is going to stand out and create the perfect contrast. Remember that what ever colours you choose you want your team emblem to stand out, making it easier for others to identify where your team comes from, whether it’s a school or a sports club.
The final consideration is that you want to choose a tracksuit that is going to provide your team with pride and unity. They should feel proud to put their tracksuit on and it should give them all a uniform, enabling them to look the same and work as a team to achieve the best end result.

Evaluating youth football players either for a draft or to determine positions is one of the most important but most poorly performed tasks done by many youth football coaches. Too often a player is assigned a position because he «looks» like the position without regards to the skills required of that specific position. Often times kids that look like football players or are the sons of coaches are given preferential treatment and are selected for the «skill» or glory positions. Another mistake many youth football coaches make is they evaluate kids for skills in a way that has little or no correlation to what actually are critical success factors to performing well on the football field. Quite often a player is assigned a position based on just one required attribute of that position without regard to the entirety of skills needed to play the position.
I Made the Same Mistake
The end result is you often have youth football teams that don’t perform anywhere near the potential of the aggregate group. So often when I’m asked to come in and trouble shoot poorly playing teams, they have kids in the wrong positions and the disparities in players is blatantly apparent if you know what to look for. Early on in my coaching «career» I too was bamboozled by the physical appearances of players. One of my first years coaching a tough talking 10 year old kid showed up to our first practice, he had «the look» a Mohawk haircut, shirtsleeves torn off, scowl/I want to tear your head off look on his face and he was a stocky but solid 120 lbs. Heck I would have guessed he had a pack a day cigarette habit from the attitude he put off, we were drooling at the thought of having him playing football for us. On the other hand there was this skinny quiet kid with a crew cut, and only 8 years old, probably weighed less than 65 pounds. He looked like one of the kids most coaches probably pray the DON’T get at first glance.
Looks Like Tarzan, Plays Like Jane
The Mohawk kid turned out wasn’t in very good physical shape, which isn’t a real big deal, but he was an excuse maker as well. He was one that questioned every drill and when he didn’t win a drill (we do almost everything in competition format) he had an excuse, he slipped, he started late, the other kid cheated, he had overeaten that day. In addition to all that, he didn’t have very good body control. He could move fairly well straight ahead but when he went to make a turn of cut it was like he was trying to turn the Titanic, he couldn’t do it. His core strength was terrible and his quickness was awful. While there are some technique and core strengthening movements we can do to improve this, even dramatic improvements would still have this player in the bottom 20% in this critical area.
Looks Like Jane, Plays Like Tarzan
On the other hand the shy scrawny 8 year old seemed to be a natural when we did our games/drill that revealed core strength. During the Dummy Relay Races, he was able to not only lift and maintain the balance of the dummy but he was running with it, where others were doing a wobbly jog. During the Towel Game, he always drug his opponents to the cone, showing excellent leg strength, natural leverage and heart. Even in the Sumo Game he showed excellent trunk and leg strength, tenacity and great natural leverage. The Deer Hunter game in my opinion is the best and most fun way to determine a players»football speed». Football speed means the ability to start, stop and accelerate in small spaces, being able to change direction and control your body to escape the «hunters». Our scrawny little 8 year old excelled at this drill, while our Mohawk was the first one out.
Doing Accurate Evaluations
The net is you cant judge a book by it’s cover and you HAVE TO measure kids to reveal their football playing skills, not how fast they can run 40 yards or how many pushups they can do. How many times in a football game do kids actually run 40 yards? And how often are 40 times actually accurate? The answer to both is rarely to never. What does a pushup prove? Upper body strength does very little to aid your linemen in his blocks, a proper block places much more emphasis on foot speed, trunk and leg strength as well as attitude and aggressiveness. Some say you can’t test for toughness, resiliency, tenacity or aggressiveness until the kids put the pads on, that is simply not true. So according to those that believe you can’t put kids into positions until you put the pads on for at least a week put themselves WAY behind. For them it is a crap shoot until the 2nd or 3rd week of practice. The Towel Game, Sumo Game, Dummy Relay Races and to an extent the Deer Hunter reveal all these traits without wearing pads.
If you are drafting players you have a huge advantage if you know what to look for and how to look for it. If you don’t have a draft, being able to evaluate kids properly is STILL a huge advantage because you can assign positions earlier, put your schemes in quicker and you don’t waste a ton of time shuffling players from position to position to position like a church social cake walk until you find the right spot for the poor confused player.
Making It Fun
If you can make the evaluation process fun for the kids it is an added bonus. The first week of practice the kids and the parents are paying close attention to the fun factor and you. You can make some huge deposits in the emotional bank accounts of the parents that week if you can make the evaluations fun. We use all the above mentioned fun evaluation games during the evaluations of my teams and they are all found in my book. I’ve found the drills/games are so effective we are able to put kids into the correct positions after the first practice with a 95% success rate.
The first game we are almost always significantly ahead of our competition, even though we always practice less. A big factor has to be being able to do accurate and effective evaluation and early placement of players.
The evaluation should be preceded by making sure you have very detailed descriptions of the requirements of each position on your team so you know which skills you are looking for to make the best fits.
The Ultra in Unusual but Effective Evaluation Drills/Games
Here is a very interesting method one High School uses to evaluate it’s players, the Rabbit Catch. Bobby Bowden even thinks there may be merit in this unique assessment practice. Think about how closely this activity mirrors what successful football players do on the field on game days. Notice the 4 State Championship Rings on the Head High School Coaches hand.
For those of you that are using my system, doesn’t this look very similar to our Deer Hunter drill/game ? Evaluate your players well and you will not only be well ahead of your competition, but you will have much happier players and parents.

1.It’s obvious but it is the most important don’t bet more than you can afford to lose.
2. The only advantage that punters have over the Bookies is that we can choose not to bet, these days the bookies have to offer odds on nearly everything but we don’t have to take them. If you don’t see something worth betting on then save your money for another day. Self-discipline is everything.
3.There is no such thing as a dead cert. My mate once lost £500 on a 1/4 dead cert. He’s a fool, don’t be a fool!
4. Pick the team not the odds. It amazes me how easily swayed some of my mates are by the odds the bookies put up. You should pick your teams before you even check the odds and stick with them, whether consciously or not they will influence your decision.
5. If something looks too good to be true then it probably is.
6. Scrutinise bookmakers specials. Specials should be avoided, the general rule being if the bookies are trying to encourage you to pick a team you should do the opposite and oppose them.
7. Team news, team news, team news. It’s important. If a teams main creative player or goalscorer are injured it seriously hampers there chances of winning.
8. Oppose favourites, bookmakers don’t often get it wrong but they do get lazy. They often overrate teams because they now that people will pick them purely on reputation.
That’s all for now, Good luck folks!
