The FIFA World Cup (often called the Football World Cup or simply the World Cup) is the most important competition in international football (soccer), and the world’s most representative team sport event. Organised by Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s governing body, the World Cup is contested by the men’s national football teams of FIFA member nations. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930 (except in 1942 and 1946 due to World War II), however it is more of an ongoing event as the qualifying rounds of the competition take place over the three years preceding the final rounds.The final tournament phase (often called the «Finals») involves 32 national teams competing over a four-week period in a previously nominated host nation, with these games making it the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world.[1] In the 17 tournaments held, only seven nations have ever won the World Cup Finals. Brazil are the current holders, as well as the most successful World Cup team, having won the tournament five times, while Germany and Italy follow with three titles each. The next football World Cup Finals will be held in Germany.

The first international football match was played in 1872 between England and Scotland, although at this stage the sport was rarely played outside Great Britain. As football began to increase in popularity, it was held as a demonstration sport (with no medals awarded) at the 1900, 1904 and 1906 Summer Olympics before football became an official competition at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Organised by England’s Football Association, the event was for amateur players only and was regarded suspiciously as a show rather than a competition. The England national amateur football team won the event in both 1908 and 1912.

With the Olympic event continuing to be contested only between amateur teams, Sir Thomas Lipton organised the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy tournament in Turin in 1909. The competition is often described as The First World Cup,and featured the most prestigious professional club sides from Italy, Germany and Switzerland. The first tournament was won by West Auckland, an amateur side from north-east England that was invited after the Football Association refused to be associated with the competition. West Auckland returned in 1911 to successfully defend their title, and were given the trophy to keep forever, as per the rules of the competition.

In 1914, FIFA agreed to recognise the Olympic tournament as a «world football championship for amateurs», and took responsibility for organising the event. This led the way for the world’s first intercontinental football competition, at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Uruguay won the tournament,before winning the gold medal again in 1928, with another South American team, Argentina, taking silver. In 1928 FIFA made the decision to stage their own international tournament. With Uruguay now two-time official football world champions and due to celebrate their centenary of independence in 1930, FIFA named Uruguay as the host country.

The 1932 Summer Olympics, held in Los Angeles, did not plan to include football as part of the programme due to the low popularity of football in the United States. FIFA and the IOC also disagreed over the status of amateur players, and so football was dropped from the Games.FIFA president Jules Rimet thus set about organising the inaugural World Cup tournament to be held in Uruguay in 1930. The national associations of selected nations were invited to send a team, but the choice of Uruguay as a venue for the competition meant a long and costly trip across the Atlantic Ocean for European sides. Indeed, no European country pledged to send a team until two months before the start of the competition.Rimet eventually persuaded teams from Belgium, France, Romania, and Yugoslavia to make the trip. In total 13 nations took part — seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America.

A spin-off tournament, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, was first held in 1991. It is similar to the men’s tournament in format, but so far has not generated the same level of interest.

If the sportsbook is busy with action, it must be football season. Whether it’s the NFL or NCAA, football betting action is fast and furious during the season. For the newbie sports bettor, it can seem a bit confusing, but football bets really come down to two types-straight bets and parlay bets.

Football Betting – Straight Bets

Here’s the workhorse for any winning football bettor. A straight bet simply means you’re betting on one football game. If you bet on more than one game on the same ticket, it’s a parlay, and we’ll talk about that in a minute.

When you make a straight football bet, you could be betting on a side or total. Simply put, when you bet a side, you «pick a side» in the game. For instance, let’s say the New England Patriots are playing the Seattle Seahawks. If you’re going to bet a side, you’d bet on either the Patriots or the Seahawks.

Every game has a point total (except NCAA football, which is most games). This is the amount of points scored between both teams. When you bet a total, you’re betting under or over that total. For instance, let’s say the total is 47 and you take the over. To win, both teams must combine for 48 or more points (47 would be a push, which means you get your bet back).

Football Betting – Parlays

Okay, so you know about straight bets, which is where you bet on just one thing per ticket. When you want to bet on more than one thing, it’s a parlay. You can bet on 2 – 20 things (depends on the sportsbook).

For instance, let’s say you bet on the Seahawks and over the total on your ticket. That would be a 2-team parlay (even though technically there’s only one team on it).

The more items you put on the ticket, the more money you’ll win if they all hit. Naturally, the more items on the ticket, the harder it is to win.

With parlay bets it’s an all or nothing thing. If one pick fails, the ticket is dead. Some sportsbooks will run specials for getting close, but that’s very rare.

If you get into making football bets via parlay tickets, you might check out «teasers,» which are parlay tickets with added points for you. For instance, rather than taking the Packers -10, you might get them at -3. Of course, the payouts are a less since the risk is minimized.

Soccer began in England in the early 1830’s as a popular

sport for working-class communities. It was seen as a way

of keeping the children out of trouble around the house and

while they were in school. They could relieve frustration

and learn to work as a team, important concepts to help

them grow and adjust to life as adults.

In 1857, the first clubs were formed in Sheffield. Within

10 years, the clubs had enough of a following to form their

own association, the Football Association, around 1867.

After the first matches between associations such as the

Sheffield Football Association and the London Football

Association, the clubs decided that official rules were

needed that could be followed between clubs.

The groups got together and began trying to establish rules

that everyone would approve, but there were many issues that

could not be resolved. Although they eventually came up with

rules, part of the group branched off and created the Rugby

Football Union.

Although in America, the sport is called soccer, throughout

much of the rest of the world it is known as football, and

what Americans know as football is called American

football.

Soccer first entered the United States through the upper

class; it was played by schoolboys and college men, but

there was not a formal soccer club until 1862 when the

Boston Oneida soccer club was formed.

Generally, this is considered the first club to carry a

regular roster, because until this time pick-up games were

the norm. The club was an elite subsection of the population

that would play against pick-up teams. Throughout the

four-year history of the Oneida Soccer Club, they never

lost a game.

Beginning in the 1920’s, soccer really began to gain a

place in America. The American Soccer League was founded in

1921, guaranteeing that the game was here to stay; it was

almost as popular as the National Football League for a

time.

Eventually, the game and the clubs began to be available

to children and adults from the lower socio-economic

classes with the formation of a new league, termed the ASL.

Since this formation, soccer has become an increasingly

popular sport throughout the United States.

Today many people around the world stop everything during

the World Cup Finals to watch the game and cheer for their

Drive Block

Driving and blocking are the bases for a good lineman. Hence the name for the most common drive: the drive block. This drive block means that you are going to push the opponent in the direction that they are aligned. It starts with the lineup, when you are facing your opponent notice which way they are aligned, if they are off to the right then you will drive them to the right if the play is occurring on the left side of the field. Execute the drive by bolting off the line with your play side foot; again if the play is happening on the left side then you will use your left foot. Bring the other foot up quickly and make a solid contact for your drive.

Up Downs Conditioning Drill

Out of all of the football conditioning drills up downs are one of the most popular. This drill starts by having the players run in place as fast as they can encourage them to get their knees up as high as they can. At the coaches signal the players will drop to the ground and do a push up, and then quickly get back up and start running again. This drill is an excellent workout and should be worked in slowly at first and then increased in intensity and length over time.

Conditioning: The Quick Jump

Reaction is a skill that players need to develop through conditioning and drills. This practice drill is intended to increase reaction speed and the ability to quickly change directions. It starts by placing players in a small four square box. Then the player will proceed to jump from on area or box to another, thus forcing the player to jump laterally, diagonally, frontwards, and backwards. Changes can be made so that the player will only use one foot and then the other while they run the drill.

Catching the ball low

Making the plays means that you have practiced the less than optimal situation and know how to react to them. One situation that most offensive players will face is the low catch. One not so perfect scenario is a low passed catch. Here are some basics to a great low catch. First, keep your hands low and lock your pinkies. Second, keep your knees bent low and in extreme cases you should be flat on the ground or diving. Second, bend your knees and get low. Use your hands and not your body. Never use your body to catch a football. Last, concentrate on catching it first and then worry about the defense, and scoring some more yards.

As a youth football coach your job gets easier as the number of players participating in organized sports increases. Participation in any kind of organized sport teaches your players about listening to coaches, dealing with other teammates, competing, working towards a goal, attending practice, sportsmanship,time management and teamwork. There are always hurdles to overcome for the first time organized sports player that other players that have played do not have to deal with.

I’m a strong supporter of involving youth in a variety of sports at a young age and letting them figure out which one they like best. Specializing at a young age may exclude the player from a sport they may love or excel at in favor of one they may grow out of.

Certain sports seem to prepare the youth football player a bit better for football than others. Again, I’m not suggesting you favor these sports over others; this is just an observation over 15 years of coaching football as to which sports seem to have the best transfer of skills over to youth football.

1) Wrestling; By Far #1, Wrestlers understand leverage and physical contact. They are involved in a sport that requires tremendous physical endurance, so the practices they attend are grueling. Wrestlers are usually very good tacklers and are easy to teach. They are usually «tough» and compared to a wrestling practice, our practices are a breeze.

2) Hockey

3) Lacrosse

4) Track

5) Martial Arts

6) Basketball

7) Baseball

So if you are out recruiting football players, you may want to start with your local youth wrestling program, then work your way down the list. It is very rare that you will find a wrestler, hockey or lacrosse player that will not excel in football.

This doesn’t mean you can’t find a skateboarder, swimmer, gymnast or BMX racer that could make a good football player, it’s just we rarely see them try to play.
