How to Become a Faster Athlete For Any Sport

When considering the physical attributes that make up athletic performance such as strength, speed, explosiveness and endurance, speed trumps them all. If you had to pick one over all others, the smart choice is speed. In wrestling for example, no matter how strong, in shape or technical they are, the faster athlete has the advantage. He will be able to beat his opponent for takedowns every time as well as escaping from the bottom position much easier. These are the two main ways to score in wrestling and the faster athlete will have control of them. In football, the benefits of speed are obvious, from running to the goal line faster, protecting your quarter back better and even tackling. A hit given by a lighter bodyweight athlete who’s extremely fast hurts as much as being hit by a heavyweight. Improving your speed will help you excel in nearly all physical sports, so any athlete who wants to win and be the best should be training for it. The question is how do you do it?

The best way to improve athletic speed is by taking a methodical approach by incorporating various exercises and drills into numerous aspects of your training throughout the entire year. However if you’re looking for an easier, shorter program, you can also improve speed by just adding a few basic concepts to the training that you’re already doing. When planning your program, keep in mind there is a genetic component to speed; some athletes are naturally much faster than others and this is wired in their DNA. These athletes will still want to train for speed to try and improve what they’ve got or at least live up to their full potential. If you’re an average joe athlete like most of us are, there is still hope. Every athlete can greatly improve their speed by training. Even if you’re not born with superman speed genes, you still have a certain amount of genetic potential at your current level of muscle mass. In most athletes, chances are high the speed component of their genes remains widely untapped and is underdeveloped simply because of a lack of training if not a lack of training know-how.

Improving your speed is a tricky game involving both your nervous system and musculature at the same time. The point is to get the body’s muscles to contract more explosively through certain motions, however all aspects of speed should be considered when developing a training program. Besides a one-time explosive contraction, an athlete may also need speed for an extended period of time, like a 40 yard sprint. Most sports require numerous reps of explosive contractions, rather than just one. All of these should be trained for however it’s most important to use exercises and training methods specific to the sport. There are several basic training methods well known to improve speed in every athlete regardless of the sport. For the best carry over however, exercises and speed drills incorporating movements and scenarios specific to the sport is a must.

One way to improve your speed is to try to become faster and more explosive moving just your own body weight. This includes fast movement body weight exercises such as plyos, box jumps, knee jumps, sprints, long jumps, explosive starts, etc. Drills that are specific to the sport are also great to practice and necessary for the best carry over to actual performance. For example wrestlers practice ghost shots for thousands of reps to develop a faster, more explosive takedown. Football players practice exploding off the line for thousands of reps to be first on their opponent and perfect their technique. There are several ways to incorporate body weight speed drills into your program. One way is to give this type of training an entire session of itself once a week, for 8-10 weeks. Another way is to include just a few body weight exercise/drills at the beginning of other types of workouts. For example your warm-up for leg day is numerous sets of box jumps.

For the best speed carry over, it’s better to keep fast-twitch body weight movements at the beginning of a workout. This is when your nervous system is the freshest and least fatigued. Some argue that performing body weight speed work at the end of a workout can possibly lead to a reduction of speed. This is because at the end of a hard training session, you have most likely physically peaked much earlier and cortisol levels will be higher. Explosive contractions are very demanding on an already exhausted nervous system and this can easily and quickly lead to over training. This is why performing explosive body weight movements at the beginning of your workout makes the most sense. Before doing this, it’s also important to stretch and warm up really well using dynamic methods. Overall, performing body weight speed work before training is a great warm-up and also improves conditioning. It should also be noted that in many sports, athletes must continue to be explosive for lengthy periods of time, while they’re exhausted. Considering this a percentage of your speed training should also include drills at the end of hard workouts or right after specific body parts are pre-exhausted. When performing body weight speed work when you’re already fatigued, choose lesser complex movements. For example, at the end of a hard leg day, don’t choose box jumps as they’re too taxing on the nervous system and also dangerous to perform. A better choice is long jumps.

Besides body weight explosiveness drills, you can also become much faster by adding resistance to your speed work. An example of this is holding light weights while performing box jumps. For wrestlers, a good example is performing ghost shots against the resistance of a training band. For sprinters, this is running while wearing a parachute or while attached to a resistance band. For improving your vertical leap, this is practicing your jump wearing a harness with resistance bands attached to the ground. While these exercises are very helpful, they should not completely replace body weight drills but rather simply added to the program. Body weight drills should be performed first and can be used as a warm-up for the body weight drills with resistance. After a good dynamic warm-up, simply performing several sets of both of these types of speed work several times a week before your usual workout will produce noticeable gains in speed in just 6-8 weeks depending on the intensity level during each session.

For the most complete development, speed training should also be incorporated into weight lifting. This is done by lifting sub-maximal weights as fast as you can while still maintaining control of the movement. A good example is using the box squat for speed work. The best way this is done is by using 40-50% of your max for 6-9 sets of 2. Sets are performed as explosively as possible and coming to a complete stop on the box during each rep. Contrast such as bands and chains are also helpful in developing speed however better for advanced athletes. A good method to produce known results is to perform speed work for box squats over a three week wave of progressive resistance. For example, week 1, perform 8/2 at 45% of your max, week 2, 8/2 at 50% and week 3, 55%. Speed work can also be performed for other exercises like the bench press, dead lift, hang and/or power clean. If using pulling motions (like the dead lifts or cleans), perform 5-6 sets of explosive singles rather than 8/2. These exercises should be performed as the first lift during a session with supportive accessories to follow. You can also continue speed development when performing rep work during accessory lifts. To do this, perform each repetition as explosively as possible for each rep/set you do.

International Football (Soccer) Academy Tips – Achieving Your Soccer Fitness Goals

When you set out to train at an elite football (soccer) academy, or work out your own football training in advance at home, it can be difficult to stay on target. But if you have a goal in mind, and specific steps to achieve that goal, you’re miles ahead of other people who do nothing but dream.

This kind of preparation makes all the difference in the world. Our international football academy coaches can always tell the difference between players who work to prepare, and those who just show up at our football academies. For you, it could be the difference between watching from the sidelines and actually achieving your football goals.

International football academy training and conditioning

The first step is setting targets and goals you want to reach in football. You can do that on a per-month basis. For example, if you’re arriving at your football academy in September, set yourself a 6-month program to decide where you want to be in terms of physical condition.

The idea is to set realistic, measurable targets. Set your targets based on an assessment of yourself, not your peers. You know where you’re at right now, and you know you want to be in the best possible shape when you arrive at an international football academy to begin your soccer training.

Look to make that improvement every week, every month. Month one can have a number of fitness elements: pushups, 50-yard sprint, 400-yard at half-pace, etc. Bear in mind that in football one must be match fit. You’ll need a lot of strength in both your upper and lower bodies, and the endurance to run for 90 minutes with little rest, in order to achieve success at the highest level.

You’ll be better off making goals you know you can meet to improve yourself little by little. And you’ll be more likely to stay on target. You can count the number of reps you do, and increase by 15 percent by the end of the month. That’s realistic. Increasing it by 75 percent? That’s probably not realistic.

International football academy language and culture

For international football academies that have an associated educational curriculum, you need to consider the language component also. If you’re going into another country with a different language, you need to work towards a basic understanding of that language.

Traveling to another country to study football, language, and culture will make for a well-rounded experience and will increase your professional marketability. Being bilingual is an obvious advantage in any business.

Set targets for both academics (linguistics) and football. If you’re continuing high school academics and you’re going into an environment where you haven’t spent time speaking the language, your goal should be arriving day one with basic communication skills. Get acclimated to the language as much as possible, studying, listening, and speaking beforehand.

And above all, show commitment, respect, and effort while studying abroad. Sometimes those extra efforts make the difference in receiving a passing grade or not!

Determination and perseverance

The NIKE slogan, «Just do it,» applies nicely here. Daily individual training discipline is the most obvious key to success. It’s about what you do when no one else is around. Sticking to your plan is the most important part of your preparation.

When you put a training program into place for yourself, it’s easy to let it slip when you don’t feel like training. It’s easy to say things like «I’m too tired, so I think I’ll skip that two hours I set aside for language or academics.» Or let yourself get distracted by friends or going to the movies instead of training.

This is where 95 percent of people don’t succeed: they don’t stick with the plan they put into place. One difference between the pros and those who don’t make it: pros stick with the program. Only the athletes with true grit and determination make it to the highest level.

Ask yourself to be that special athlete (and student) by showing extreme commitment and determination. You can do it if you are mentally disciplined enough to commit fully!

It’s easier to achieve training targets or goals when you’re in an international football academy program. Players have less trouble sticking with the football training schedule because someone else (the football coach or manager) is setting up the training program for you. Everyone around you is pushing you to perform. You have teammates doing the same thing.

Attending an international football academy is much more demanding than any other academic or cultural exchange program abroad. You’re committing yourself to being ready, mentally and physically, to participate as a footballer in the football development academy. You will be training daily over a nine-month period.

Put it in your mind that the work starts the day you commit to register to get the maximum benefit. This means you should arrive ready and prepared to get the most out of your international football academy experience.

Differences Between Canadian and American Football

American and Canadian football both descended from rugby and began in Canada as a game played between British soldiers garrisoned in Montreal. The soldiers played a series of games against students at McGill University. McGill played several games against Harvard in 1874 and a tradition was born. Despite their mutual origins, the Canadian and the American game developed differently and now have substantially different rules and regulations.

The biggest difference between Canadian and American football is the size of the playing field. In Canada, football fields are 110 yards long and 65 yards wide. In America football fields are 100 yards long and 53 and 1/3 yards wide. The goal posts in Canadian football are placed at the front, rather than the back of the end zone which is also deeper in Canadian football than American.

Canadian football teams have twelve players as opposed to the eleven on American teams. Because the same number of players is required at the line of scrimmage in both games, this results in an extra backfield player on Canadian teams. This means that the typical Canadian offensive setup has two slot backs instead of a tight end and on defense, two defensive halfbacks and one safety instead of two safeties as is typical in the American game.

Another difference between the two games is the number of downs. Instead of four as in the American game, Canadian football has three. This results in a more pass and kick oriented game since there are fewer downs available for short-yardage running plays. The kicking rules are also slightly different with the kicker being able to recover and advance his own kick. For this reason, kicking is a much more integral part of Canadian football than American.

The biggest difference between the kicking rules in the two games is that there is no fair catch rule in Canadian football. In American football, if a kick returner thinks he will not be able to advance the ball after recovery, he can signal for a fair catch and be immune from contact. In Canadian football no player on the kicking team except the kicker and any players behind him on the field may ever be within 5 yards of the ball unless it has been touched by an opponent. Also, in Canadian football any kick that goes into the end zone is a live ball, except for successful field goals.

There are other minor differences as well including scoring, motion and time rules but they are not as significant as the major differences noted here.

Football (Soccer) Betting Tip – Understanding The Various Odds Formats To Make Money

Odds are the prices the bookmakers offer which tell you how much you can win in a bet at a given stake. In general,the higher the odds the lower the probability of winning and the team is not expected to play as well.

Different bookmakers in different countries offer their odds in different ways depending on local custom. You can see odds presented in UK (fractional), European (decimal), US (moneyline) and the formats popularly used in the Asian betting markets which include Indonesian, Malaysian and Hong Kong-style odds formats.

In live betting (also known as bet in play, in-game, in-running betting), the odds tell a story. The ability to decode the odds to identify the betting opportunities is the secret to make money, and it is crucial to understand the various odds formats to enable you to make timely decisive bets.

Below is a brief conversion chart of the different odds formats. As there is much difficulty to present the chart in a table form with neat tabulations, please do follow the sequence of the odds in accordance with the odds formats:

UK=>European=>US=>Indonesian=>Malaysian=>Hong Kong

5/1 => 6.00 => +500 => +5.00 => -0.20 => 5.00

3/2 => 2.50 => +150 => +1.50 => -0.67 => 1.50

1/1 => 2.00 ==> 100 ==> 1.00 ==> 1.00 => 1.00

8/11 => 1.73 => -137 => -1.37 => +0.73 => 0.73

1/2 => 1.50 => -200 => -2.00 => +0.50 => 0.50

Please take note of the following points:

1) For the UK and European odds, any payouts above 1/1 and 2.00 respectively are the negative odds in the Malaysian format.

2) The Indonesian odds are like US odds, just divided by 100.

3) Take note that for the US and Indonesian odds vs the Malaysian odds, the interpretation of positive (+) and negative (-) figures is the opposite of each other. For example, US +500/Indonesian +5.00 is Malaysian -0.20; US -200/Indonesia -2.00 is Malaysian +0.50, etc.

The History of Online Sports Betting

Man, by virtue of his instinct to survive, is naturally a gambler. Given the risks of living day-to-day life, it was considered an act of skill to stay alive until the sun sets, especially during the Stone Age. As the human race began to develop systems that would facilitate the physiological need of survival, the gambling instinct that was inherent in man did not dissipate. Rather, it became stronger with the passage of time.

The gambling instinct, simply put, is displayed early into the history of human civilization. The Romans were notorious for their fierce and unforgiving gladiator matches, which were mainly violent at least and visceral at best. By 80AD, the emperor Titus then conducted the first official ceremonies at the Colosseum, and thus the festivities had begun. Slaves were pitted against each other in mostly battles to the death, and sometimes against wild beasts as well. Spectators relished the thought of betting on their favorite gladiator, hoping that he would live to see the end of the glorious battle.

But as time progressed, the violence of the human sport had proved to be too much for some, and gambling has been reduced to animal fights. Of course, this has been around even before the human blood sport of gladiators, but they had become highly popularized in certain parts of Europe -particularly Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, France, and even some parts of Asia such as the Philippines and Indonesia. Among these fights were bullfighting, cockfighting, and fox hunting.

As European influence spread more and more all throughout the continents of the world, the thrill of betting soon became a worldwide phenomenon. Gradually, the hunger for the sight of blood was soon surpassed by the promise of amassment of wealth. The stakes were high, but made more appealing by the rise of establishments such as casinos. Betting was never more enjoyable.

But alas, the collected momentum of sports betting was halted abruptly by the coming of the two World Wars since activities such as race meeting and lotteries became severely restricted. Its return only came in the mid-1950s and soon flourished again.

Not to be outdone, sporting events still remained strong in gambling circles, as events such as horse races, basketball matches, and baseball games just seemed to beg for more incoming bets. The rise of communications technology also facilitated the development of sports betting, with phone betting becoming an attractive option to those who live far and away from the games. Companies such as Intertops in Antigua started this as far back as 1993.

When the Internet finally came out for public access and personal use, the betting world evolved into a more closely-knit community. Globalization served its purpose in connecting the world in ways previously thought inconceivable -after all, who would have thought that you can bet on a game halfway across the world with such ease? In 1996, a company in Gibraltar called Microgaming took advantage of this trend and began developing software for use in other gaming companies all over the world. Others soon followed suit, and thus online sports betting as we knew it was born.

Sports Betting Tips – Sports Betting Tips to Boost Your Winning Rate – Part 4

I would like to know how much you want to be a professional bettor. Let’s not say professional but a serious bettor who wants to make a living from gambling. If you are only betting for fun, then this step can be very tough and pretty much will drain all the time you have. The fourth Sports betting tips is «do your homework». Are you wondering? Read on.

Homework, in this case, covers a lot of things. Shopping for numbers is one of them. Betting Research is another type of homework. It is important to do research to ensure and maintain your winning rate. There are many other important factors when it comes to beating the books. Researching things like: statistics, line moves, game analysis, team trends, situational trends, historical angles, valuable lines, inflated numbers on public teams, etc. is not to be ignored whatsoever.

In horse betting, for instance, the important aspects are the post position, race track conditions, history and condition of the horse, history of the jockey, history of the trainer, and more.

Having done betting research does not necessarily mean that you will definitely win, but on thing is absolutely true is that you boost your winning rate. If betting research does not guarantee a win, why should you waste your time doing research? To answer this question I refer to a long term profit. Boosting your winning rate does not only apply to every game you bet on. But it as well applies to overall of your betting in one year or half a year, or any given time span.

When you are getting used to doing research and analyzing all data during the research, you are just in the way to making profit in the next year or whenever you are ready because it would be much easier for you in the process of picking the bet with high chance of winning.

Talk to you soon in the next part of Sports Betting Tips. The next part would be Bet on Home Underdog and don’t be a fan. Stay tuned and do not forget to do the research as much as it is required before you bet.

Soccer Betting – Bet In Play

Bet in play or live betting which some prefer to call it, is gaining popularity among football punters.

This is because as more bookmakers are offering live betting for football matches, punters see this as an easy avenue for them to make more money. How true is this?

First of all, punters get to see the game live and know which team is going to score or win the game. This is one advantage that the punters have.

Bookmakers will open up the odds accordingly – odds versus money return. So in a way, the bookmakers will not lose because they will adjust the live odds accordingly.

This type of betting is only good for punters looking to make fast money plus they are able to have a better understanding on which team is playing well and going to win the game.

Bet in play can be placed up to the 80th minute of the football matches. So it’s really for those punters who are in for a fast cash. But again, they can be in for a fast loose too.

Bet in play involves betting strategy which is the same for the normal Asian Handicap bets. Anything that is offered by the bookmakers must first be analysed carefully before placing any bets.

Bookmakers are smart enough to be opening the kind of adds in the 80th minutes. They are ninety percent correct and they know which of the team will win. So the idea is to go with the banker because in soccer or football betting, the money is with the banker.
