Amnesty International urges Newcastle and Eddie Howe to speak out on Saudi ownership

Amnesty International has called on Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and anyone involved with the club to speak up about human rights violations in Saudi Arabia, after 81 people were executed in the Gulf state at the weekend.

Eighty per cent of the club is owned by the Saudi Arabian-led Public Investment Fund (PIF), which Newcastle and the Premier League insist is independent from the Gulf state itself. However, its chairman is Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, who is also Deputy Prime Minister.

The executions happened on Saturday for crimes ranging from killings to belonging to militant groups. It is the largest mass execution carried out in the country’s recent history.

Following his game against Chelsea this weekend, Newcastle manager Howe was asked by the media about events in Saudi Arabia. While he said he was «well aware» of what was going on, he insisted his focus was on football, which has drawn criticism.

  1. I'm not even a Newcastle fan but what is he to do or say. What is every single person employed by Newcastle to do. From the manager to the laundry man or the cook? Quit because their club has been bought by the Saudis? Blame the prem league if anybody.

  2. Nothing to do with Eddie Howe and he does not need to comment !! These CUNTS criticising Howe would be better directing their concerns through other channels !! TOSSERS !!

  3. The Premier League should be speaking out first but what of the human rights of the innocent men, women and children that were murdered by the 81 men?

  4. Be aware Amnesty support terrorists and know absolutely nothing about human rights. If this is such a bad thing lets put it all to bed, A minimum of 13 teams in the premier league should be banned as states such as China, Middle east (all of them have same rules) U.S., Russia. They all have things we don't agree with. At least the Saudis don't try to hide it. Lets just sort football out first as it is corrupt and games are fixed. Once we've done that we can then look at ownership.

  5. Are Amnesty International asking all U.K. MSM Broadcasters and press, SKY, BBC. The Guardian, The Times , ITV. BT Sport etc etc etc. To boycott coverage of Qatar 2022 World Cup ???? Hypocrisy of the highest order !! UK companies owned or majority controlled by Saudi Arabia.. British Petroleum ..British Telecom. Savoy hotel group. Uber. The Independent news group.Just to mention a few of hundreds.. Are the righteous UK Gov. and Media going to sanction and ban these companies ????? ???????????Careful what you wish for hypocrital virtue signalling gob shites !!!
Yet another witch hunt on a Football club that has no control over Geo politics !! Give your heads a massive wobble F.F.S.????????? And lets not even open up the Chinese can of worms !!! Lots of fat greedy fingers in that pie !!!

  6. Funny how this current round of selective outrage at NUFC's association with the Saudis arose when the latter refused to take American calls on the ongoing Russian situation. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of murderous religious lunatics and deluded sports fans, but something's a little fishy here.

  7. Why should the manager speak about it? You don't question your bosses. The Premier league and FA should've asked these questions before allowing the sale. Or is it happening now because Saudi Arabia is refusing to produce more oil for the west?

  8. Uk ?? government hunting nowadays foreign club owners. Firstly Chelsea and now Newcastle, excuse me first of all you should have checked before they own the club and not after they invest their money. Most corrupted government in the word.

  9. When America sentences people to the death penalty no one bat's an eye but when these Arab countries do the same its a humanitarian issue. How about mentioning that the people executed were convicted of murdering innocent people, involved in terrorism within the Saudi Kingdom which killed law enforcement, and so on. What the media does is blatantly omit certain pieces of information to obscure public opinion. If us the general public had all the information then we can formulate our own opinions. Shout outs to those people too lazy to do their own research and get spoon fed but bias media ?

  10. We need to look at ourselves look at our government sponsoring terrorist Zionist terrorist supporting Israel mass murders but that's okay

  11. It's is shambles how they allow the acquisition of clubs like that by sheikhs oligarhs etc, good they sanctioned Chelsea but what about Newcastle or City??! Or Brit government gonna suck up tyranic goverments just for cheap oil. These Arab governments are much worse than Russia! They chopping up their own people with immunity and that's ok as long as they give your government cheap oil??!

  12. We all know that the Saudi government is oppressive. But asking Eddie Howe to make a political statement is wrong. It's better to boycott the world cup rather than forcing people to make political statements
