Career As a Sports Writer

To all avid sports fans out there who have ever wondered what it would be like to cover sports for a living, welcome to the Information Age! With the Internet driving the need for fresh content to an all-time high, you now have the tools to be just like those on TV that get to go to events and get paid to do exactly what it is they love – cover the world of sports.

Many people like sports, but there are few out there that actually have the passion for sports that it takes to make a living doing it. Finding out whether you have the passion for it is almost like riding a bike – you’ll never figure out whether you have what it takes to be good until you go for a spin. Sports video sites allow users to do exactly what they want to do – talk about sports every day – but do it for a national audience.

As a matter of fact, I’d bet that most of you reading this probably spend a lot of your days analyzing sports and the very issues that are spoken of on the Web sites and television every day.

Why not make a career of it? After all, that’s how I got started. I actually got the opportunity to start writing about the time that I figured out that I was never going to make it as a player. I still had the passion and the drive, but at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, I was not going to be able to continue in sports unless I learned a new way to express the mental knowledge of the game that I had acquired.

About that time, the Internet was increasing rapidly and so was my love for all sports. Whether football (my main passion) or the intricacies of other sports that were just hitting the mainstream (the X-games), there was plenty to talk about.

Especially in today’s society, sports serve several important purposes. Sports are used for entertainment, for information, for business and for some people, as a relief from the normal bad news that fills our information highways. With ever-growing gas prices and crime rates, the world of sports will without a doubt take on new importance in the coming years. Sports business and especially sports technology is growing at a rapid rate, meaning even more things to discuss on the information superhighway known as the World Wide Web. As sports grow, so does the use of videos and blogs on the World Wide Web to get the unique perspectives and instant gratification that most Internet users seek when discussing any topic.

The collaboration of an increased need for sports and the advances in technology means that you too can share in the joy of discussing sports with the world. It can be anything from Brett Favre’s future to the corruption of NBA officials or just your opinions on what your favorite team needs to become the best in its sports. The level at which you stay involved in sports is completely up to you. Sports are now as much an interactive event as what they are a spectator’s event.
