Sport Photography – How to Photograph a Premier League Football Match. Tips & Camera settings

I sometimes get asked a number of questions regarding a days photography at a football match and how to Photograph a Premier League Football Match. What time we arrive, where do we sit, how close do you get to the players etc. So I thought I would try and cover some of the days movements and what we get up to from start to finish.

I currently work as a freelance photographer covering various sporting events for The Press Association, mainly football. I am lucky enough to cover Premier League matches most weeks through the season, with Cricket, Athletics and Cycling amongst others keeping me busy through the summer months.

I sometimes sit pitch side and think how privileged we are to get so close to the action! Fans pay a lot some games and sit a lot further back than we do, so it’s always good to stop for a second and be grateful that we can get such good access to carry out our work.

This match didn’t have to much incident unfortunately, so not too much action captured! No doubt I’ll film another match before the end of the season.

Please feel free to ask any Q’s in the comments section. Camera settings, kit etc and I’ll do my best to answer.

  1. Really informative and great video for aspiring photographers (which would include myself!) It was great to see a behind-the-scenes look of a professional match

  2. This is brilliant Mark! When I finish work later Im going to go through your videos!
Can I ask how do you get into this type of photography? Do you have any videos regarding this topic?
Cheers you’ve got a new sub!

  3. Hi Mark. Really enjoyed this video. I shoot mainly fashions but have managed to cover the slower pace of the Australian Golf Open. Are you shooting RAW at all times and typically how many shots are you taking in the 90mins.

  4. Great video…quick gear question, when you shoot with the 400 and 70-200, are you using the 7D2 body on the 70-200 to "close the gap" in focal length between the 200 and the 400? It looks like you aren't using two 1DX, but I can't immediately tell if your other body is 5D or 7D.

  5. same as Donald Chodeva's comment. I never realised what goes into sports photography until I came across you. (to stress full for a 71 year old) I will stick to landscapes. You certainly earn your money.?

  6. Tomorrow it will be my first time i will photograph football game and this video was very helpful… I have 70-200mm lens, will that enough?! and do i need tripod for that lens? btw love ur work!

  7. Hi Mark, commenting from across the pond here in Maryland. I really enjoyed this video, especially on how you managed to juggle between the 400 and 70-200. Question: What is the usual aperture you shoot at for futbol matches? F2.8 might be too wide open because then the other players would be out of focus. Your thoughts?

  8. Brilliant video ! Loved how you explained about the management of the day and how you relay photos back. I do photography for main arena up at crufts and this has helped a lot. Subscribed !
