Rwandan genocide: "How football saved my life" – BBC Sport Africa

Eric Murangwa Eugene, a Tutsi on the verge of being killed by Hutu extremists during the Rwandan genocide of 1994, recalls how his life was saved. Those who had come to kill him realised he played for one of the country’s biggest clubs and so spared his life.

Today, Eric Murangwa Eugene uses football as a tool to bring harmony in Rwanda in the hope of avoiding such conflict in the future.

This video is part of Crossing Divides, a BBC season bringing people together in a fragmented world.

  1. False call of America on Iraq, Libia, Syria, Burma and many other parts
of the Wolrd, the regime change agenda was worked by force against
Muslim Leaders, may be it was correct, now the time has come for the
same actions against Indian Regime, lets see how double standards will
be upholded by Americans againt a non Muslim leader who is terrorising
the worlds biggest democracy, lets see and witness the coming months and
write down on pages of history for future generations about the best
manupulations done, the US and UN played a key role for execution of the
agenda of America designed to get control of Oil and Gas and it was
nothing to do with the ¨Religion¨ but the present policies and current
affairs in Indian is very scary and for sure the UN authorities are
closely watching the current scenario in India, lets match the
Afganistan scenario with India, a woman stonned to death and the
international media was in action and gone blind on Issues of more
dangerous than Irq and Afgan issues, lets see how the reaction begins of
indternational media and UN taking its position to Judge and deliver
justice to innocent people of India. indirectly the silence of DW and Euro News and many other famous media houses on the Indian issues, is this just because of getting the sponsorships and ads from Indian Lobbies to keep media houses close thier one eye and see the things pro Hindutva. just imagine the furture of the World.

  2. 3. The French colonialists , as did did the British, pursued a policy of “divide and rule”,that created deep fissures and antipathy between tribes and ethnicities that had coexisted side by side for centuries or more . While winding down their colonial enterprise , under force of circumstances , they contrived to leave behind a set up , manned by their ‘dependable’, local collaborators , who would continue to watch over the ‘interests’ of their erstwhile masters . However the toxic ,divisive , legacies left behind by the colonialists remained in place and even morphed into multiple expressions of mutual mistrust and hatred .The rapid accretion of real or perceived grievances was bound to act as a detonator for a gruesome and bloody carnage that the Rwandan genocide is . In this tragic backdrop, the role of the French state/government remains highly suspect and blameworthy . As former colonialists they were morally bound to play their part in defusing tensions, which they themselves had created . With a large diplomatic mission and a sizeable military presence in the wider region , it is inconceivable that they did not have ,even an inkling , of the trouble as it was brewing up . That they gave scarce attention to that ominous possibility and even failed to intervene when the killings were going on is a bruising indictment of their role in this most sordid episode of history .

  4. Africans are very forgiving in nature.. I don’t know why.. we don’t like to dwell on anger, maybe because through history our anger has been futile … so we choose to love .. the problem is our leaders and white people.. they conspire and destabilize us.

  5. I came late from our football match an area 20km from our area, it was about 12am when we dispersed from my team mates , as I walked towards home ,I met 3 policemen who stopped me and asked where I came from, after telling them and showing them my football kits full of sweat, they were very happy even asked how many goals we scored and then told me to go home, football is really Loved by every one

  6. How do u keeep calling it "RWANDAN genocide" ?are all rwandans massacred during the genocide? It is genocide against tutsi ,stop that denial⚠️ , you should be ashamed of spreading fake news for such corporation and name you have.

  7. Am sorry for what happened in Rwanda some decades back.
Am also happy how the people of Rwanda learned from their mistakes and decide to live together peacefully now.
    Am Somali ?? brother
I got many information about that civil war in the book__Left to Tell

  8. As an African this doc brought me into tears I respect both ethnic groups to leaving the pass behind and work together for better Rwanda and Africa at large
Thank you my brothers and sisters of Rwanda Kigali my second home✌✌

  9. The people of East Congo will disagree with the comments about how stable and good Rwanda is now. What happened in Rwanda was beyond my imagination and comprehension. Yet, for Congo, Rwanda , China, US UK are not innocent in what is happening there now. Another genocide you don’t hear in the news . Why…It’s resources. When will Africa be free of the pain, suffering and tribalism that divides her and allows such horror. ?

  10. I watched the movie about what happened in your country, till today it's still one of the saddest thing I've seen. Good to see Rwanda doing great now, your country is arguably the best place to live at the moment in the entire Africa. Hope you guys maintain the peace and continue living as one. Regardless of tribe, religion or whatever we're all humans. GOD BLESS US!
