"It was the 1st time I've seen a red card like this" – Mikel Arteta unhappy with Martinelli decision

Mikel Arteta has demanded answers from the PGMOL, the Premier League’s official referee body, on the back of Arsenal’s fourth red card in six games.

The Gunners were able to hold on for the final 20 minutes at Wolves without Martinelli to win 1-0 and move into fifth place in the Premier League after top-four rivals Manchester United and Tottenham had dropped points earlier in the week.

Martinelli was sent off for two bookable offences in the same passage of play – shoving Daniel Podence as he took a throw-in and then barging over Chiquinho after Michael Oliver had played the advantage.

  1. Fact: Martinelli has a right to a warning before being dismissed for a second yellow card offense. He didn’t receive a warning so he can’t be dismissed in that situation. It’s very clear what needs to happen now. There needs to be an additional hand signal made by the referee which not only indicates ‘play on advantage’ but also indicates ‘yellow card offense’. This means the players will be aware that advantage is being played but a yellow card offense has been committed. The offending player will have received his fair warning and then is free to receive a second yellow if he commits a further offense during the succeeding passage of play.

  2. I have seen several matches in my whole life where a player fouls 2 players within 5 seconds and receive only 1 yellow card. Never have I seen an incident like this before. It's weird but let's be objective in our analysis and name any incident like this with evidence since we started watching soccer.

  3. These 'strange' circumstances only occur to Arsenal. Taken by itself it is arguable, but no way on the Earth would this ever be called against Liverpool, Man City or Chelsea. There is an unconscious bias.

  4. Woow.. the ref must be really angry..

I'm trying to let you go, yet you commited another foul within just 5 seconds..

btw, what actually happen to Martinelli? Hurm.. new 'Xhaka'.. hahaha

*I remember when Essien got 2nd yellow cards.. yet the ref forgot to give him the red card.. lol

  5. It's clear that there is something wrong with the standard of refereeing in this country when the presenter is using words like 'bizarre' and 'strange' to describe Michael Oliver's decision making.
It's getting silly, the inconsistency in the referees is ridiculous, in the game Cedric made two blatant fails in less than 20secs, referee gave NOTHING, there was also couple of hefty challenges made by a wolves player who never got booked.
It also seems with some referees that the first 20 or 30mins of the game players can make fouls without punishment.
Ignore the letter of the law, the best referees in the world all have one thing in common, they use their common sense before they use their cards.

  6. For sure some red cards were stupid and Xhaka has contributed a lot… however if a player make a foul same as Xhaka he may not have a red card. That's the problem and there's a lot of examples

  7. l think all referee is not fair to Arsenal,ls not only away but a|so at home,lf you don't be|ieve you can see back Arsenal game,How many red card was referee give to Arsenal?ls top for all team
